Telkom SA Limited is one of the largest companies registered in the Republic of South Africa and is the largest services provider on the African continent based on operating revenue and assets. Telkom offers fixed-line voice (some 4.8 million fixed-line customers) and data services, branded as Telkom. Mobile communications services are branded through a 50% shareholding in the joint venture, Vodacom, a company incorporated in the Republic of South Africa operating in  South Africa where there are some 12.8 million mobile customers and a total of 2.6 million mobile customers in operations in Tanzania , Lesotho , Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mozambique . Vodacom is a joint venture investment with Vodafone Group Plc (35%) and VenFin.

Telkom's fixed-line networks include, but are not limited to, the PSTN, Transmission, X.25, Frame Relay, Time Division Multiplexing Constant Bit Rate (TDM-CBR), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP) and Access networks. In 2000, Telkom opened a state-of-the-art national network operations centre, capable of monitoring our core network and coordinating and dispatching core network repair personnel from one control point based at our Techno   Park in Centurion, Pretoria .

Telkom has geographical presence throughout South Africa with International connectivity from two international switching centres to terrestrial, satellite and submarine cable routes. Telkom has investments in three cable systems connecting Africa and international destinations. Submarine cable systems exist between Cape Town , West Africa and Europe and between Cape Town and the Far East . Telkom and Intel Corporation have announced a collaboration to trial next-generation WiMAX* broadband wireless networks in South Africa . Trials started in Pretoria with further trials in Durban during 2005.
