Priority Programme #2
Priority Programme #02: Converged Devices & Access Points
The FMCA Priority Programme #02 underpins the Alliance's strategy, which is to accelerate the development and availability of fit for purpose Wi-Fi enabled Convergence devices and interoperable access points and gateways:
-
Main Focus being on Wi-Fi SIP, Cellular Devices
-
Without neglecting other priority Convergent Devices (Wi-Fi UMA, etc.)
-
Including Access Point and Interoperability aspects
Aims & Objectives:
Driven by the customer needs identified by the FMCA Operators, this Programme is focused on collaborating with industry to ensure the end-user experience with Convergence Devices is as good as the one of traditional mobile handsets:
-
Address interoperability between Network, Handset and Access Points.
-
Generate FMCA handset roadmaps (incl. technology splits where possible).
-
Identify what applications will add immediate Value to enhance the Convergence experience.
-
List, assess and define key Convergence Handset Product Requirements.
-
Produce an outline perspective of what the key drivers of handset take up within the various telco-specific end-user bases are; i.e. what will trigger the sale of handsets.
-
Ensure Customer must have large choice of models available.
-
As for UMA, standard solutions must be available, to allow operators to offer Commercial Off The Shelf products
-
In dual mode handsets, drive the integration of Wi-Fi with the "phone" applications, as the normal mobile communication stack.
-
Work with standards and certification organisations to address critical issues such as Wi-Fi Simple Configuration, QoS, Device-Access Point Interoperability, Battery Life, RF Performance, etc.
Programme Deliverables:
-
Key outcome for year 2007 is the release of the FMCA Product Requirements Definition, PRD 3.0.
-
Prioritisation of FMCA product requirements for Convergent devices and Access, where applicable, by order of importance; e.g. How critical they will be in 06/07, 07/08, etc.
-
Comparison of FMCA product requirements with Vendors' implementation roadmaps.
-
Provide timely contributions to standard and certification organisations with whom the FMCA has co-operation agreements; e.g. HGI, Wi-Fi Alliance.
The current target date for the release of the FMCA Product Requirements Definition, PRD Release 3.0, is the end of October 2007.
