Converged Devices & Access Points - PP#02

The FMCA Priority Programme #02 underpins the Alliance's strategy, which is to:

Accelerate the development and availability of fit for purpose converged multi-mode (cellular/Wi-Fi/WiMAX/LTE) devices, without neglecting other priority converged devices (Wi-Fi UMA, etc.), access points and interoperability aspects

Aims & Objectives:

Driven by customer needs identified by FMCA Operators this Programme is focused on collaborating with industry to ensure the end-user experience with multi-mode converged devices is as good as the one of traditional mobile devices.

  • Generate FMCA device roadmaps (incl. technology splits where possible)
  • List, assess and define key multi-mode device Product Requirements, according to market requirements and use cases identified by FMCA community
  • Ensure the customer has a large choice of converged devices available
  • Address interoperability between networks, devices and access points, through trials and plugtests
  • Ensure standards-based solutions are available, to allow operators to offer commercial 'off the shelf' products
  • In multi-mode devices, drive the integration of non cellular technologies with the "phone" applications, as the normal mobile communication stack
  • Work with standards and certification organisations to address critical issues such as Wi-Fi Simple Configuration, QoS, Device-Access Point Interoperability, Battery Life, RF Performance, etc

Programme Deliverables:

  • Key outcome in 2008 was the release of the FMCA Product Requirement Definitions, PRD 4.0
  • Interoperability Week which focussed on the key test areas, User Interface, Wi-Fi Association, Mobility and Service Continuity and Quality of Service - More information can be found here
  • Prioritisation of FMCA product requirements for Convergent devices and Access, where applicable, by order of importance
  • Comparison of FMCA product requirements with Vendors' implementation roadmaps.
  • Provide timely contributions to standard and certification organisations with whom the FMCA has co-operation agreements; e.g. HGI, Wi-Fi Alliance, 3GPP, ETSI
